Saving water: How a new sustainable detergent helps

Anyone who wants hygienically clean textiles uses water. A lot of water. But this resource, once seemingly in endless supply, is coming under pressure due to climate change. And this is putting consumers' attention on water conservation. Can retailers support them in this?

The topic is highly emotional. Of all the raw materials we use, water is arguably the closest to our hearts. When it's threatened, we immediately understand and feel the threat. Or at least we can't close our eyes to it for too long.

Saving water becomes a criterion of sustainability

While the importance of sustainability in consumer behavior has undeniably increased, the water factor leads a strangely shadowy existence. Consumers are most likely to think about the potential for certain ingredients to endanger water quality and thus life itself—first and foremost, of course, plastic, which decomposes into microplastics. But saving water?

Not focusing on water scarcity is something we have to be able to afford. Most European countries have never faced this problem. It was a problem for others, as long as the summer didn't break all records in Greece, Spain, or Portugal. A situation that, as we know, has changed.

And with that, awareness of the value of the resource has also reached its most everyday use: washing clothes.

Sustainable consumption: What do consumers want?

To what extent is sustainability even a criterion when choosing a detergent? For two-thirds of German consumers, it apparently is: 61.5% stated in a survey that they consider it when purchasing a detergent.

Perhaps even more intriguing, however, is the question: What do people understand by sustainability? A study by Deloitte shows that, in general, the criteria of natural ingredients and animal welfare are by far the most important for German consumers. According to a study by Mintel, the aspect of sustainable packaging is particularly relevant for detergents for 18% of consumers.

However, if you survey people independently of specific products or services, a different picture emerges. According to a survey by the information service provider CRIF, 80% of people in Germany have already taken concrete measures to reduce their ecological footprint. 37% explicitly mention steps to make their water consumption as sustainable as possible.

Save money on washing with the right product: No pre-wash, fewer rinse cycles

Washing machine manufacturers have made significant efforts to reduce water waste. Modern, energy-efficient washing machines use an average of 49 liters of water per wash cycle in Eco mode, compared to up to 180 liters 30 years ago.

What's less well known, however, is that choosing the right detergent can also help save water. Three criteria are crucial here:

·      Performance : The more effective a detergent is, the shorter the wash cycles can be. An efficient detergent eliminates the need for a pre-wash cycle, a measure that reduces consumption by 15% to 20%.

·      Dosage : Almost everyone tends to use too much detergent when washing clothes. While this doesn't make the laundry any cleaner, it does create significantly more foam in the drum. Modern washing machines have sensors that detect this. This results in additional rinse cycles until the foam is washed out. The less often you overdose, the less water you waste.

·      Washing powder : A similar effect can be achieved by using washing powder instead of liquid detergent. Washing powder foams less, which also helps avoid unnecessary rinsing. This means (in addition to saving energy) an additional 15 liters of water.

Overall, choosing the right washing powder can reduce water consumption by up to 50%.

The environmentally friendly detergent that uses less water

With EccoClean, you can now offer your customers exactly that: This Swiss innovation is an environmentally friendly washing powder (tested with multiple certificates) that has been optimized for maximum performance through years of research.

Each paper sachet contains seven grams of washing powder—exactly the amount needed for a full load of laundry. Overdosing is a thing of the past. Since the manufacturer completely avoids dyes, fillers, or flow agents, the sachets contain only the pure concentrate.

In addition to significantly reducing water waste, the focus is also on water conservation. EccoClean is highly biodegradable, and the special paper sachets dissolve completely residue-free in water after just a few seconds. There's no plastic film, so the application also prevents the creation of plastic waste or microplastics in wastewater.
